Calliope’s Hamlet

Calliope’s Hamlet

Something is Rotten in the State of Denmark

William Shakespeare has written a brand new play: Hamlet. It’s dramatic! It’s mysterious! It’s full of ghosts, revenge, and very long speeches. But before it can be performed for Queen Elizabeth I, it must first pass a very important test. Enter Alice, a (former) countess, who is planning a magnificent entertainment for the Queen at Harefield in 1602. She needs the perfect play for the occasion, and Shakespeare is determined that Hamlet is exactly what she’s looking for.

With the help of his extremely enthusiastic (and extremely unhelpful) assistant, Richarda Burbage, Shakespeare attempts to perform the entire story of Hamlet on the spot. There’s just one problem: they have far too many characters, far too many props, and absolutely no idea what they’re doing. As the audition spirals into glorious chaos, Shakespeare will need the help of your students to bring Denmark to life. Can they help him prove that Hamlet is fit for a Queen… or will this royal rehearsal end in complete theatrical disaster?
